What Can You Do to Help
Prevent Crime
Go out and meet your
neighbors
With our busy lifestyles we often overlook the simple task of meeting our neighbors.
Your neighbors can help by giving you additional eyes and ears to keep watch
over your house. Don't let the opportunity slip by; as an icebreaker, bake something and take it over, borrow or loan a power tool, offer to baby-sit, comment on a beautiful plant (they might even offer you seeds!). It's not too late to reach out and meet your neighbors today.
Start a phone tree
Get the phone number of everyone on your block and keep it up to date. You can keep each other informed of power outages, suspicious vehicles, important activities or free garden produce.
This is also a way to inform neighbors without access to email of events.
Give Your Home an
Occupied Look
Most burglars are looking
for unoccupied homes. If your home appears occupied, the burglar will usually
look for other more inviting sites. This is the single most important tip for
protecting your home during long absences.
- Temporarily stop
delivery of the mail and newspapers, or arrange for a neighbor to pick them
up for you. Papers piling up in front of a house or mail stuffed in a box is
an indication that no one is home.
- Have your lawn mowed
and watered in your absence.
- Always leave a few
inner lights burning at night Use timers for lights and have them come on in
the evening hours. Include TV and radios among the items on timers. If you
can, set timers for varying times on different days.
- Leave trip plans and an
emergency phone number with trusted neighbors and friends. Make sure someone
is checking the house while you are gone.
- Move valuables and
small appliances so they can't be seen from a window.
- Put valuables such as
jewelry, large sums of cash, documents in a safe deposit box.
- Never leave your house
key hidden outside under a doormat, in a flower pot or on the ledge of a
door.
- You can the Police Department to have your home placed on
a house check or vacation watch. An officer will periodically stop by your
home to check on it. Provide contact points locally and
where you will be, in case you have to be reached
